Then a bestselling author dies during a signing in The Ghost and Mrs. McClure, and Pen learns that the shop's most unusual regular is Jack Shepard, the ghost of a hard-boiled private eye murdered there in 1949.

That pairing tells you almost everything about the tone. Pen is practical, decent, and a little overwhelmed. Jack is wisecracking, old-school, and very much a noir detective, even in the afterlife. Together they make the series feel both cozy and slightly off-kilter in the best way. One part of the fun is watching Pen adjust to the fact that her best investigative partner is invisible to almost everyone else.

Quindicott matters as much as the haunting. The town has the close-knit gossip, old houses, local grudges, libraries, landmarks, and literary people that make a bookish mystery world feel lived in. Because Pen runs a bookstore, every case can naturally bring in authors, collectors, readers, festival events, or odd bits of literary history. The crimes tend to stay personal, but the world around them is rich with atmosphere.

Jack's presence also lets the books play with time. He brings a 1940s detective's instincts, habits, and voice into present-day cases, and some stories brush up against old crimes from his own era. That gives the series a cozy-noir blend you do not see very often. The paranormal side is real, but the books still care about clues, motives, and the way people hide the truth from each other.

Pen's home life keeps the stories grounded. She is raising her son, helping Aunt Sadie, keeping the shop afloat, and trying to build a stable life in a town that never feels as quiet as it looks. That everyday pressure gives the mysteries weight. Pen is not solving crimes for the thrill of it. She is protecting her family, her business, and the community she has returned to.

If you like your mysteries with shelves of books, small-town atmosphere, and a ghost who talks like he walked out of a black-and-white movie, this series has a very specific charm. Start with The Ghost and Mrs. McClure and you will quickly see why Pen and Jack make such an appealing team.
