Series background & context
The Harper Grant Mystery series is light, witchy and set in the kind of coastal town where everyone knows your business but not everyone knows you are a witch. The books are cosy paranormal mysteries that follow Harper, a young woman who can see and talk to ghosts, as she tries to hold down a job, keep her family’s magic secret and avoid being drawn into yet another murder investigation.
Abbott Cove might look like a picturesque small town, yet it seems to attract trouble, restless spirits and the occasional very awkward corpse.
Harper lives with her sister Jess and their formidable grandmother, the latest generation of a long established witch family. Jess is better with potions and spells, Grandma Grant dabbles in schemes and competitions that never quite go to plan, and Harper’s gift is the one she would probably not have chosen, the ability to see the dead who are too angry, shocked or confused to move on. That gift makes her the natural person to ask when a resident dies in suspicious circumstances and then refuses to stay quiet.
In A Witchy Business, a body turns up during Abbott Cove’s annual festival, drawing Harper into a murder that stirs up more than one local secret and leaves her working uneasily alongside new police officer Joe McGrady. A Witchy Mystery finds her dodging unwelcome yoga classes and dealing with another unexpected death, while A Witchy Christmas drops a holiday killing on top of family disagreements and seasonal chaos. A Witchy Valentine and the short story Harper Grant and the Poisoned Pumpkin Pie add historical reenactments, baking contests and poisoned desserts to the mix, all seen through Harper’s wry, slightly exasperated point of view.
The tone stays warm and humorous even when the stakes are high. Ghosts offer clues, distractions and the occasional rant, spells go sideways, and Grandma’s ideas about how to get what she wants are rarely subtle. Harper is often caught between keeping the witches’ secret, doing the right thing for the dead and staying on the good side of Joe, who would really prefer she left the policing to him.
Because each mystery is self contained, you can dip in almost anywhere, but reading in order lets you watch Harper grow more confident in her magic, her friendships and her complicated relationship with the living and the dead. Expect small town gossip, kitchen table family scenes, a gentle thread of romance and murders that feel puzzle like rather than grim, all in a world where talking to ghosts is just another part of getting through the day.
