Author bio
D.S. Butler is a British crime writer who built a second career out of a first love. Under that name, and as Dani Oakley and Danica Britton, she writes everything from gritty police procedurals to witchy small town mysteries.
Born in Kent, she grew up devouring crime novels and mystery stories from the local library, a habit that never really stopped. Instead of going straight into writing, she trained as a scientist, studying biochemistry to PhD level. She went on to work as a scientific officer in a hospital pathology lab and as a research scientist, eventually spending several years at the University of Oxford.
Those years in the lab shaped the way she thinks about evidence, cause and effect, and tiny details that change everything.
Later, when she moved to the Middle East and spent time living in Bahrain, she started drafting crime stories in her spare hours. That first experiment grew into a full time writing career, and she has not really stopped since.
Out of that shift came two long running series that anchor much of her work. The DS Jack Mackinnon books follow a London detective working for a major investigation team, chasing serial killers, ritual murders and organised crime while juggling the politics of big city policing. The DS Karen Hart novels are set in rural Lincolnshire, where seemingly quiet villages hide cold cases, buried abuses and conspiracies that refuse to stay in the past, and where Karen is constantly pulled between procedure and her own sense of justice.
Readers often meet Karen Hart first, in books such as Bring Them Home, Where Secrets Lie, What She Said and Find Her Alive, where she is still dealing with the loss of her own family as she hunts for missing children, long vanished teachers and women who have simply stopped coming home. Running through the series is a long term thread about corruption, old cover ups and the suspicious crash that killed her husband and daughter, which gives the investigations extra emotional weight. The Jack Mackinnon series, which includes titles like Deadly Obsession, Deadly Ritual, Deadly Payback, Deadly Game and Deadly Intent, leans into fast paced investigations, forensic detail and the pressures of working major crimes in London, showing what happens when ambition, desperation and violence collide in a city that never really sleeps.
Butler’s writing is not all darkness. Under the name Danica Britton she writes the Harper Grant Mystery series, starting with A Witchy Business, where a young diner waitress in Abbott Cove can see and talk to ghosts and keeps getting dragged into magical murder puzzles, while as Dani Oakley she turns to East End family sagas such as East End Trouble and East End Diamond, full of gangsters, divided loyalties and tough women trying to survive.
She has also written stand alone psychological thrillers, including Lost Child and Her Missing Daughter, which focus on ordinary people caught in the worst moments of their lives, and across all of these books her scientific background shows up in the way she handles forensic work, toxicology and the small procedural steps that make an investigation feel real.
These days she lives in Lincolnshire with her husband, listening to Queen, reading widely in crime and thriller fiction, and creating new stories about characters under pressure and the choices they make.
