Hannelore Cayre Books in Order

Hannelore Cayre was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, in 1963 and grew up in the Yvelines, west of Paris. Her childhood home stood between a motorway and presidential hunting grounds, a strange in-between setting that fits the people and places she later brought to the page.

Before she wrote fiction, Cayre studied law, specializing in literary and artistic property. She joined France 3 Cinéma and became its financial director while still young, working close to the film world long before she began making films herself.

A serious car accident in Chile in 1991 changed the course of her life. Her recovery took years, and afterward she chose a different professional path. In 1997, she was sworn in at the Paris bar and began working as a criminal lawyer.

The courts gave her plenty to write about.

Her legal work brought her into contact with the pressure, absurdity, and unequal rules of the justice system. It also gave her a close view of people caught at its edges, including defendants, families, police, and the small-time operators who tend to be judged more harshly than the people with real power.

Cayre published her first novel, Commis d'office, in 2004. It introduced lawyer Christophe Leibowitz-Berthier and began a trilogy that continued with Toiles de maître and Ground XO. In 2009, she directed a film adaptation of Commis d'office, bringing her legal knowledge and film experience together.

She has never had much interest in tidy heroes.

English-language readers first met her through The Godmother, translated from the French novel La Daronne. Its narrator, Patience Portefeux, is a widowed court interpreter who knows the drug trade through police wiretaps and decides to use that knowledge for herself. The book mixes crime, money trouble, family obligation, and sharp jokes about bureaucracy. Its English translation won the 2020 Crime Fiction in Translation Dagger, and the story was later adapted for film with Isabelle Huppert as Patience.

Her next English translation, The Inheritors, comes from Richesse oblige. It follows Blanche de Rigny as a surprise inheritance opens up a family history full of wealth, cruelty, and buried connections. The novel moves between nineteenth-century Paris and the present, while keeping Cayre’s attention on class, luck, and the ways money can shape a life.

Across her work, Cayre writes about people who have been ignored, underestimated, or boxed in by institutions. Her characters can be reckless, funny, angry, and morally hard to pin down. That mix of legal detail, social frustration, and dark humor gives her novels their brisk, unsentimental energy.
