Author bio

John R. Erickson was born in Midland, Texas, on October 20, 1943. When he was three, his family moved to Perryton in the Texas Panhandle, the town that would remain central to his life and work.

He wasn't the student most likely to become a writer. Erickson has described himself as a reluctant reader and a fairly lazy student, though he ran track, played football, performed in school plays, played several instruments, and taught himself the five-string banjo.

A high-school English teacher changed the direction of things. When Annie Love assigned an original poem during his senior year, Erickson found writing came naturally, and he spent the rest of the year staying up late to write more poems.

He studied at the University of Denver and the University of Texas at Austin, where he met Kristine Dykema, whom he married in 1967. He later studied theology at Harvard Divinity School, leaving just short of a master's degree. For years, though, writing was not a neat path forward. He wrote novels, stories, essays, plays, reviews, and articles, and collected a sizable stack of rejection slips.

From 1974 through 1981, Erickson worked as a ranch cowboy in Oklahoma and Texas. He made time to write for four hours a day alongside the physical work of ranch life. That experience gave him the landscape, chores, animals, weather, and cowboy talk that make the Panhandle setting in Hank the Cowdog feel so lived-in.

Then he and Kris decided to do it themselves.

In 1982, they started Maverick Books in their garage in Perryton. The first Hank the Cowdog book followed in 1983. Hank, the vain but devoted Head of Ranch Security, sees every skunk, coyote, chicken mystery, and odd noise as a matter of urgent professional importance. His anxious sidekick Drover, the ranch family, and a large cast of animals turn those emergencies into broad, funny adventures.

Readers often come for Hank's big opinions and exaggerated detective work, but the books also have the rhythm of ranch life. The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog, Murder in the Middle Pasture, The Case of the One-Eyed Killer Stud Horse, and The Case of the Swirling Killer Tornado mix mysteries, bad decisions, animals, weather, and loyalty to home. Erickson wrote the stories to be read aloud, and he has recorded the audiobooks himself, supplying character voices and original songs.

His work extends beyond Hank. Erickson has written nonfiction about cowboy life, ranching, music, and the Texas Panhandle, including Panhandle Cowboy and Catch Rope. Across both the fiction and nonfiction, he returns to working landscapes and people who take their daily jobs seriously, even when the day goes sideways.

The series grew from a garage project into a long-running family favorite, with books, audiobooks, and stage adaptations. Erickson was inducted into the Texas Literary Hall of Fame in 2019.

He and Kris have continued to live and work near Perryton, Texas, on their cattle ranch. It is a fitting home base for a writer whose best-known hero believes the ranch cannot possibly run without him.
