Hammarby Books in Order

Carin Gerhardsen’s Hammarby series is a Swedish police procedural centered on Detective Inspector Conny Sjöberg and the violent-crime team serving the southern parts of Stockholm. Each book brings a new case, but the investigators’ work lives, home lives, rivalries, and worries continue from one story to the next.

The first novel, The Gingerbread House, begins with a disturbing discovery: a woman comes home from the hospital to find a dead man in her kitchen. Sjöberg and his colleagues must identify him, understand why he was there, and work out whether an apparently random killing is part of something much larger.

Nothing is as separate as it first appears.

In Cinderella Girl, the team faces two urgent threads at once. A teenage girl is murdered aboard a ferry running between Sweden and Finland, while three-year-old Hanna wakes to find herself locked inside an empty home. The investigation gradually makes clear that another child may be in danger. The Last Lullaby turns to the brutal killing of a family in their Stockholm apartment, with a key question hanging over the case: how could the mother, who worked as a cleaner, afford such an expensive home?

The cases are dark, but the series is not only about a clever clue trail. Gerhardsen gives space to the everyday strain of police work, from understaffing and illness to family obligations and the emotional cost of repeated violence. Sjöberg is a committed investigator, but he is also a husband and father whose personal life does not conveniently pause when the phone rings.

Later books, including The Saint, continue to use a crime that looks straightforward on the surface to expose old secrets and missed warning signs. Stockholm is more than a backdrop here. Apartments, schools, ferries, suburbs, and winter streets all become places where ordinary routines can suddenly turn threatening.
