Halle Shifters grows out of the world Bell built in Halle Pumas, but it feels broader and more connected. The setting is still Halle, Pennsylvania, and the familiar small-town energy is still there, but this series widens the lens. Bears, wolves, tattoo artists, vets, hunters, and cross-species pack politics all start colliding in ways that make the town feel busier and a little more dangerous.

The shift happens right away in Bear Necessities. Alex arrives in Halle planning to solve a family problem and leave, then meets Tabitha and loses any hope of a simple exit. From there Bell moves through Julian and Cyn in Cynful, Ryan and Glory in Bear Naked, Jim and Chloe in Figure of Speech, and Barney and Heather in Indirect Lines. The books share a lot of characters and really do work best when read in order, because the town's problems keep rolling forward.

What makes this series stand out is the balance between romance and ongoing community trouble. Mating bonds matter, of course, but so do the hunters, the white shifters, the old grudges between packs, and the vulnerable people who need protecting. Bell never lets the town relax for too long. Just as one couple figures themselves out, something new is threatening the larger family around them.

The emotional tone is very Bell. There is plenty of possessiveness, teasing, and high heat, but there is also injury, trauma, and a lot of gentle work around trust. Several characters are recovering from violence or rejection. Others are dealing with the fear that they are too damaged, too old, too young, or too complicated to be fully chosen. Bell tends to answer those fears the same way every time, by building more family around them.

The linked cast helps a lot. Living Art Tattoos becomes a hub. So do the local homes, pack ties, and cross-series relationships. Characters who were side figures in one story keep showing up with more depth later, which gives the series a cozy quality even when the plot gets tense. It feels like a town where everyone knows everyone, and that can be either comforting or deeply inconvenient.

If you want shifter romance with a real ongoing arc, Halle Shifters is probably the Bell series to start with after Halle Pumas. It keeps the humor and chemistry of the earlier books, but adds stronger continuity and higher stakes.
