Author bio

Gytha Lodge came to crime fiction by a long route. Before readers met Jonah Sheens, she was writing plays, screen work, and stories for video games, learning how to build tension one scene at a time. She studied at King's Ely in Cambridgeshire, read English at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and later took an MA in creative writing at the University of East Anglia.

Theatre came first.

After Cambridge, Lodge set up a theatre company and toured productions, and her one-act play Otherwise won a Fringe award in 2010. That stage background still shows in her novels. Her scenes are clean and vivid, her dialogue has a real ear for what people say when they are hiding something, and she knows how to let a room full of ordinary social tension turn quietly dangerous.

The move into novels was not quick or neat. By the time She Lies in Wait was published in 2019, she had already completed several manuscripts, and has said it was the seventh novel she finished. Along the way she was shortlisted for the Yeovil Literary Prize and Arts Council England fiction awards, and she built a huge online readership for children's and young adult work on Wattpad, where her stories picked up more than five million reads.

She stuck with it.

That persistence paid off. She Lies in Wait became a Sunday Times bestseller and a Richard & Judy Book Club pick, and it announced the mix Lodge does especially well: a strong detective hook, careful police work, and a deep interest in what old friendships and family loyalties can do to people over time. In Watching from the Dark, a murder glimpsed over a late-night video call opens into a knot of dependence, resentment, and secrecy. Lie Beside Me begins with one of her sharpest premises, a woman waking beside a dead stranger, and Little Sister turns a missing-girl case into something stranger and more unsettling.

She is very good at bad decisions.

That is part of the appeal of her books. The people at the center are rarely monsters or saints. They are frightened, compromised, lonely, jealous, hopeful, and sometimes way out of their depth. A Killer in the Family brings those interests together neatly, mixing DNA testing, missing family history, and serial-killer fear, while The Cupid Touch shows a different side of her writing, more romantic and playful on the surface, but still built around secrets, pressure, and emotional fallout.

Place matters, too. The Jonah Sheens novels are set in the New Forest and surrounding southern communities, and Lodge gets a lot out of that landscape. Woods, quiet roads, small neighborhoods, and seemingly ordinary homes all become places where the past hangs around longer than it should. Even when the premises are big, the books stay grounded in the small details of how people live, lie, and protect the people they love.

Lodge lives in Cambridge with her son. Readers who return to her work tend to come back for the same reason: she can give you a hook that makes you turn the page, then fill it with characters messy enough to feel real.
