GX Todd Books in Order

GX Todd is the pen name of Gemma Todd, a writer from England's West Midlands. After studying history at the University of Birmingham, she spent fifteen years working in public libraries. For much of that time she drove a 35-foot mobile library van around the Black Country, which feels like a fitting prelude to books full of long roads, isolated places, and people trying to keep going.

Books got to her early. Todd has said she found the school library when she was eleven, and from then on reading became a huge part of her life. She was the sort of kid who disappeared into stories, made up worlds of her own, and learned very young that imagination could be company as much as escape.

Writing did not arrive as one lucky first try.

Before Defender found a publisher, Todd had already written two earlier novels that never made it into print. She set them aside and kept going. That persistence matters when you look at her career, because the series readers know her for came after practice, disappointment, and a lot of faith that the work would eventually find its place.

Then Defender changed the pace of everything. Todd has said the book started as a standalone, and only near the end did she realize the world and characters still had more to give. After months of submissions it found representation, and the project grew into a four-book deal. What began as one novel became Defender, Hunted, Survivors, and Ghosts.

Her fiction sits in the overlap between post-apocalyptic thriller, horror, and road story. Defender opens in a broken America where Pilgrim, a damaged drifter, listens to the voice in his head and stops for a girl sitting alone on a dusty road. That girl, Lacey, becomes central to the whole series. Readers who click with Todd's work usually talk about two things at once, the danger of the world, and the warmth that somehow survives inside it.

She likes putting people under pressure.

That shows all through Hunted and Survivors, where the cast expands and the mystery behind the voices gets stranger and more dangerous. By the time Ghosts arrives, the story has widened into a full end-of-the-world struggle. Even so, Todd never loses sight of the people at its center. Her books are harsh and often violent, but they still make room for loyalty, found family, rough humor, and the stubborn fact that people can choose decency in a wrecked world.

Todd has spoken plainly about the ideas that pull her toward writing: isolation, the human mind, loneliness, survival instinct, and the psychology of violence. She has also said she imagined The Voices with some of the feel of a Western, a nearly empty landscape, a wandering figure, scattered settlements, and the question of whether to keep moving or stand and fight. That gives the series a slightly different shape from a standard apocalypse saga.

Her library years seem to sit quietly behind the work too. Spending so long around readers, books, and isolated library users gave her a close view of how much stories can matter when life gets narrow. In 2017, after major cuts hit her local library service, she left that job and became a full-time writer. She has joked that she now spends her days writing in her pyjamas, but there is real grit behind the joke. She still lives and works in the West Midlands, and she still sounds like someone who never forgot what it meant to be a reader first.
