Series background & context
The Gunner Fox books shift Bobby Akart into a more action-forward lane without losing the science hooks that run through so much of his work. Gunner Fox is a U.S. Air Force major, test pilot, and earth scientist living on Dog Island, Florida. That combination lets the series move easily between military action, disaster science, and larger geopolitical threats.
The first half of the series is the Asteroid trilogy, where Gunner is pulled into a mission to stop an asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Those books lean into big stakes and fast momentum, but Gunner still feels like an Akart lead, capable, grounded, and surrounded by people he trusts, including old friends and allies with useful skills.
Then the series gets stranger.
The later Odessa trilogy takes Gunner into darker thriller territory, with a mystery tied to a lost German U-boat, the Bermuda Triangle, old Nazi shadows, and bioterror danger. That makes the full series feel broader than the title first suggests. It is not just one kind of threat. It is a hero dropped into escalating global crises.
If you want Akart at his most adventurous, this is a good series to try. It keeps the research-minded feel of his disaster fiction, but adds a pulpy, globe-threatening edge that makes Gunner Fox stand apart from his more family-centered books.
