Series background & context
The Guild Hunter books are set in a version of our world where angels and archangels rule territory, vampires are made by angelic power, and the Guild exists to police the fallout. These are not soft, glowing angels. They are immortal rulers, political predators, and sometimes the most dangerous creatures in the room. That mix gives the series its shape: part urban fantasy, part investigation, part immortal court drama, and always romance.
The series opens with Angels' Blood, when vampire hunter Elena Deveraux is hired by the Archangel Raphael for a case no mortal should survive. Elena is stubborn, smart, and gifted at tracking vampires by scent. Raphael is beautiful, remote, and used to absolute obedience. Their relationship becomes one of the anchors of the whole series, especially in the books that return to them as the heart of New York.
But Guild Hunter does not stay with one couple all the way through. Singh widens the lens to people around Raphael and Elena, including hunters, vampires, and members of Raphael's Seven, so books like Archangel's Blade, Archangel's Storm, Archangel's Shadows, and Archangel's Enigma deepen the world without losing the larger arc. The romances change, but the loyalties, grudges, and consequences carry forward.
These books have teeth.
Setting matters here. New York is central, but the series travels through a globe divided among archangelic courts, each with its own rules, culture, and old scars. Sleep, resurrection, blood bonds, and the slow upheaval of the Cascade keep raising the stakes, so even an intimate love story is usually tied to a bigger political shift.
Power is always personal in this world.
If you like urban fantasy with a sensual edge, this series hits that note, but it is not only about danger or heat. Singh spends real time on friendship, recovery, chosen family, and what it means to build trust when everyone involved is armed, wounded, or immortal. That emotional continuity is a big part of why the books reward reading in order.
Start with Angels' Blood and keep going straight through the novels if you can. The novellas, collected in Angels' Flight, are worth folding in along the way because they add texture to side characters and the wider court. If you want angels who rule like warlords, hunters who never learn to kneel, and a long-running romance world that grows into a true epic, Guild Hunter is built for that.
