Series background & context

The Gretchen White series follows Dr. Gretchen White, a psychologist and criminologist who consults for the Boston police on violent crimes. Gretchen is a specialist in antisocial personality disorders, and she is open about being a sociopath herself. That gives her a cold, practical way of reading suspects, but it also makes everyone around her wonder how close she is to the people she studies.

The central tension is simple and uneasy: Gretchen helps solve murders, while Detective Patrick Shaughnessy still believes she may have committed one as a child. When Gretchen was eight, she was found near her murdered aunt with a bloody knife. The case never fully left her, Shaughnessy, or the reader. Detective Lauren Marconi becomes another important part of the triangle, less willing than Shaughnessy to reduce Gretchen to the worst thing people suspect about her.

A Familiar Sight starts the series with a case that feels disturbingly personal. A teenage girl, Viola Kent, is accused of killing her mother, and public opinion has already decided what kind of monster she is. Gretchen sees something familiar in Viola, which makes the investigation less about easy guilt and more about what people choose to see when a child does not act the way they expect.

What Can't Be Seen turns the series inward. Gretchen and Marconi begin pulling at the old story of Gretchen’s aunt, and the more they learn, the less stable the official version feels. It is both a cold case and a character study, because Gretchen herself is not sure how much she can trust her own memory.

See It End shifts the pressure onto Marconi, who is arrested for an execution-style killing. Gretchen is convinced her friend is innocent, partly because Marconi would have been smarter if she were guilty. That dark little bit of logic says a lot about the series.

This is not a cozy mystery series.

The books mix police procedure, psychological suspense, family secrets, and sharp character conflict. They work best in order because each case adds to Gretchen’s past and changes her relationships with Shaughnessy and Marconi. The hook is the crime, but the real question is whether Gretchen understands people better than anyone else, or whether she understands them just enough to be dangerous.
