Gretchen Archer writes the Davis Way Crime Capers, comic mysteries centred on an undercover casino investigator. A Tennessee resident and mother of three, she turned seriously to writing as her children left home for higher education. Her route to publication was less direct than her fictional heroine's arrival at a new job: several unpublished manuscripts came before she found the character and setting that would become her continuing series.
She wrote four standalone manuscripts before beginning Davis Way's adventures.
Archer had been an enthusiastic mystery reader, keeping her original Nancy Drew books long after childhood. When she considered writing a series herself, a casino offered a setting that interested her more than familiar themes involving cats or baking. She learned through repeated attempts at writing and submitting work, rather than arriving with formal writing training. A local account of her career records hundreds of rejection letters before publication, alongside an earlier stint helping in her husband's manufacturing business.
The casino idea had a memorable personal connection. For her fortieth birthday, her husband took her to the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi. Much of the trip initially involved looking after their children, but a later visit to the casino produced a substantial win. Archer has described that experience as an impression that stayed with her. The Beau Rivage became the real-world model behind her fictional Bellissimo Resort and Casino, where luxury and backstage trouble share the same address.
Double Whammy, published in 2013, introduces Davis Way as a new member of the Bellissimo's security team. A fresh start becomes a tangle of casino wrongdoing, mistaken identity and problems involving the man she has married twice. Her landlord Bradley Cole supplies legal help as well as romantic interest. The book establishes a series in which the heroine's personal affairs and investigations are rarely allowed to remain separate for long.
Archer followed it with further capers, expanding both the casino world and Davis's life. Double Dip uses a slot tournament, disappearing participants and a trail leading to an Alabama church. For Double Knot, she deliberately changed the surroundings and attempted a locked-room mystery aboard a luxury vessel. Putting familiar characters somewhere new gave her a different structural problem to solve, while preserving the misunderstandings, practical complications and humour that connect the books.
A mystery can stand alone while the main character's life continues from one book to the next.
Shorter stories offer other angles on that shared world. Double Deck the Halls gives Davis's grandmother a Christmas adventure at the Bellissimo, where a senior slot tournament becomes considerably less festive. The series also reaches listeners through audiobooks narrated by Amber Benson. Archer has spoken appreciatively about Benson's understanding of the Southern voice and about an early audiobook being re-recorded so the narration would be consistent across the sequence.
Archer lives on Lookout Mountain with her husband and a sheepadoodle named Kevin. Her books return to the combination that first drew her toward the casino setting: a place built to appear effortless, filled with people whose competing interests make it anything but. Davis gives that world a continuing point of view, balancing crime, family and relationships with a determined effort to get through the latest improbable working day.
