Grayson would rather be a writer and a father than a professional monster hunter. Unfortunately, children, ghosts, demons, ancient legends, and frightened families keep asking for his help. He has a young son, Pip, and his adventures gradually gather a close little group around him: Miranda, her daughter P.C., and Barnaby, an orphan who calls himself a barn cat.

The first novella, The Strange Visitation at Wolffe Hall, begins when P.C. seeks Grayson's help because she thinks he is Thomas Straithmore. Something dangerous is threatening her and her mother at Wolffe Hall, and the distinction between a fictional Gothic hero and a real man quickly becomes less useful than Grayson might like.

The series then moves through haunted estates and historic places. In The Resident Evil at Blackthorn Manor, Grayson heads toward Scotland after a ghost warns his aunt that evil is coming. The Ancient Spirits of Sedgwick House takes the growing group to the Lake District. The Virgin Bride of Northcliffe Hall brings a kelpie and Arthurian echoes into the Sherbrooke family home.

Later stories, including The Red Witch of Ravenstone Folly, The Alarming Disturbance at Holyroodhouse, and The Night Creature at Storne Hope, widen the supernatural map. The danger may involve malevolent spirits or old legends, but the emotional center remains a family and a group of children who are brave, curious, and often one step ahead of the adults.

The tone is lighter and more openly fantastical than the main Sherbrooke Brides books. These are compact Gothic adventures with humor, affectionate family scenes, creepy settings, and supernatural threats that need a practical response.
