Series background & context
A Brit in the FBI is an international thriller series written by Catherine Coulter with J. T. Ellison. The six books follow Nicholas Drummond, an American-born investigator raised in Britain, and FBI Special Agent Michaela Caine, usually called Mike. Together, they move from a high-profile theft in New York to conspiracies involving explosives, ancient objects, covert operations, and threats that cross borders.
The series starts with The Final Cut. Nicholas is Scotland Yard's new chief inspector when a colleague is murdered and a famous diamond is stolen from a Crown Jewels exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The case brings him to New York and introduces the fast, international scope that defines the rest of the books.
By The Lost Key, Nicholas has joined the FBI and is partnered with Mike. A Wall Street stabbing appears to involve a naval historian and antiquities dealer, but the victim's life is more complicated than it first seems. Their working relationship is one of the series' main pleasures. Nicholas brings a British background and an investigator's confidence, while Mike is direct, skilled, and unwilling to let him take over a case.
The stakes escalate quickly. The End Game takes them into an investigation of a violent environmental extremist group. The Devil's Triangle puts Nicholas and Mike at the head of the Covert Eyes, an elite FBI team handling dangerous international cases. The Sixth Day and The Last Second continue the pattern with ruthless masterminds, advanced technology, and threats capable of causing large-scale harm.
These are action thrillers more than conventional police procedurals. Expect travel, hidden organizations, dangerous villains, narrow escapes, specialized knowledge, and cases that can jump from one country to another before the agents have a chance to catch their breath. The books also maintain a thread of attraction and partnership between Nicholas and Mike.
Reading in order is strongly recommended. Their professional roles and personal connection develop across the six novels, and later books assume readers know the team and its earlier risks.
Start with The Final Cut, then continue through The Lost Key, The End Game, The Devil's Triangle, The Sixth Day, and The Last Second.
