Author bio

Graham Ison spent much of his working life in places where discretion mattered. He served for five years in the British Army, then joined the Metropolitan Police, beginning a police career that would last three decades.

Much of that time was spent in Special Branch at Scotland Yard. Ison worked on espionage cases and served for four years at 10 Downing Street as a protection officer to two prime ministers. He also helped protect visiting presidents, royalty, and other heads of state. It was a serious job, with plenty of material for someone who later wrote about police work, secrets, and pressure.

He knew how institutions worked from the inside.

After leaving the police, Ison turned his attention fully to crime fiction. His first novel, The Cold Light of Dawn, appeared in 1988. It introduced Detective Chief Superintendent John Gaffney and set the pattern for early books that mixed murder investigations with the guarded world of Special Branch and intelligence work.

Confirm or Deny followed Gaffney into a hunt for a traitor inside British intelligence. The Home Secretary Will See You Now and A Damned Serious Business continued to explore cases where official power, private loyalties, and national security overlap. Readers who enjoy the practical details of an investigation, rather than glamorous spy fantasy, will find a lot to like in these books.

Ison also created Detective Inspector Tommy Fox, whose cases brought a more straightforward police procedural feel to titles including Lead Me to the Slaughter, The Laundry Man, and Snowdrop. His later Brock and Poole novels moved into contemporary London, following DCI Harry Brock and DS Dave Poole through murders that begin in ordinary places, flats, parks, airports, streets, and workplaces, then uncover complicated motives beneath them.

The long-running Brock and Poole books have an easy partnership at their center. Brock is experienced, stubborn, and often behind the times, while Poole and the rest of the team bring their own energy to the job. Titles such as Working Girl, Gunrunner, Exit Stage Left, and Naked Flames balance methodical police work with dry humor and an eye for the everyday messiness behind a crime.

Then Ison took a step back in time.

The Hardcastle novels are historical mysteries set largely during the First World War. Their central figure is Divisional Detective Inspector Ernest Hardcastle, head of CID in the Metropolitan Police's Whitehall Division. With Sergeant Charles Marriott at his side, Hardcastle investigates killings against a backdrop of air raids, military bureaucracy, shortages, spies, and a city living with the strain of war. The series begins with Hardcastle's Spy and eventually reaches the eve of the Second World War in Hardcastle's Secret Agent.

His work was informed by experience, but it never needs a lecture to show it. Ison's investigators ask questions, test alibis, chase leads, and deal with people who would rather keep their business hidden. The result is a large body of crime fiction for readers who like police procedure, wartime London, and puzzles built from human motives.

Graham Ison died in 2020. His final Hardcastle novel, Hardcastle's Secret Agent, was published in 2021.
