Good Boys Books in Order

Good Boys is Robinson letting himself be funny, affectionate, and completely ridiculous, while still building a real alien invasion story underneath. The hook is obvious and excellent: what if humanity's fate partly rested in the paws of a very good dog?

Yes, the dog matters.

The series begins with Micah Taylor, an ex-Army Ranger living in New Hampshire with his golden retriever, Grover. A quiet life does not last long. First contact arrives with one alien species looking for help and another ready to crush anything in its path. Suddenly Micah, Jess Bender, Grover, and a growing group of human and alien allies are caught in a war much bigger than Earth.

What keeps the books from becoming a one-joke premise is that Robinson commits to the worldbuilding. The Kynolari, the Draun, the Lost Tribe, and the wider cosmic struggle all matter. So do the characters' grief, loyalty, and exhaustion as the war gets worse. By the later books the scope is huge, with ruined cities, resistance movements, strange powers, and globe-spanning missions.

Still, the heart of the series never disappears. This is a story about companionship as much as invasion. Grover is not a gimmick. He is part of why the books hit at all. Robinson understands that a loyal animal can raise the emotional stakes faster than a speech ever will.

If you want sci-fi that can pivot from absurd to heartfelt in a page or two, Good Boys is a strong pick. It has aliens, apocalyptic stakes, and big action, but it also remembers that readers will absolutely show up for the dog.
