Series background & context

The Give Him Back series starts with a question that sounds emotional but quickly turns dangerous: how far will someone go to hold on to the life, marriage, and man she believes should still be hers?

That question drives the first book, where Lava is left trying to survive the wreckage of her husband's affair and the rage that comes with being replaced in plain sight. Hardin does not treat betrayal here as a quiet heartbreak story. She treats it like a fuse. Once Lava starts acting on that pain, the books move into suspense territory fast, with jealousy, desperation, guilt, and hidden motives all pushing against each other.

Nothing stays simple for long.

The second book, Kemp and Satin, opens the story wider. The series is no longer just about one woman's damaged marriage. It becomes a tangle of overlapping loyalties, competing loves, and private agendas. Kemp and Satin's relationship comes under pressure, Lava is still emotionally tied to what happened before, and new choices create new risks. That shift is part of what makes this series work. It starts intimate, then lets the consequences spread.

The tone is dramatic and fast, but the real tension comes from character motives. Hardin is interested in what betrayal does to people after the first explosion. Who doubles down? Who lies to survive? Who tells themselves they are fighting for love when they are really chasing control, revenge, or proof that they still matter? Those are the questions underneath the plot turns.

Expect domestic suspense with a messy relationship core. The books lean into cheating, obsession, damaged trust, and the dangerous things people do when they cannot accept that a relationship has changed. Readers who like polished detectives and procedure will not find that here. Readers who like emotional thrillers, where the danger grows out of private choices and personal wounds, probably will.

It is all very close-range.

If you like B.M. Hardin when she is writing about marriage, betrayal, and fallout, Give Him Back is one of the clearest entry points into her work. The stakes feel personal from the start, but the story never stays small. Each secret pushes the next one, each lie creates a bigger problem, and each attempt to fix the damage usually makes the damage worse. That pressure is the engine of the whole series.
