Firefly Lane

by Kristin Hannah

2008

In the 1970s, shy, bookish Kate Mularkey and fearless new girl Tully Hart become unlikely best friends on a blue collar street called Firefly Lane. Over three decades they weather college, careers, marriage, motherhood, and fame, discovering how envy, secrets, and ambition can strain even the closest bond. It is a sweeping story of friendship that asks what it costs to be someone's person for life.

Series background & context

Girls of Firefly Lane follows Tully Hart and Kate Mularkey from their awkward teenage meeting in the 1970s Pacific Northwest through the tangled adult lives that grow out of that first summer on a dead end street called Firefly Lane.

In Firefly Lane we meet them as opposites. Tully is the new girl with the dangerous mother, all attitude and ambition and halter tops. Kate is the quiet one across the street, buried in books and convinced she will never be noticed. A single act of kindness pulls them together and, from that moment on, they move through school corridors, newsroom internships, and family kitchens as a single unit: TullyandKate.

The first book tracks three decades of that friendship. It moves from late night dorm rooms to a glittering television career, from a Seattle newsroom to a suburban cul de sac, and keeps circling the same questions: what are you willing to trade for success, and what happens when one friend moves faster than the other. Along the way, the story digs into marriage, motherhood, depression, and the kind of arguments you can only have with someone you expect to love forever.

Fly Away picks up in the aftermath of the events that shattered them. Years later Tully is adrift, trying to keep a promise to show up for Kate’s family and not at all sure how to be anyone’s steady person. Marah, Kate’s teenage daughter, is drowning in grief and looking for escape in a dangerous crowd and an older boy who seems to understand her hurt.

At the same time, the series finally opens up the past of Dorothy, known as Cloud, the mother who abandoned Tully again and again. Her sections show how addiction, poverty, and shame shaped the woman readers first met through a child’s angry eyes, and how hard it is to come back into your daughter’s life when you have failed her before.

Together, the two books form a multi generational story about women who do not always get it right but keep trying to repair the damage. The tone is unapologetically emotional: there are hospital rooms and talk shows, late night phone calls, and quiet kitchen scenes where no one quite says what they mean until it is almost too late.

Readers who come to the Girls of Firefly Lane series after watching the Netflix adaptation will recognize the spine of Tully and Kate’s story, but the novels go deeper into their interior lives and into the long aftershocks of loss. If you like big, time spanning stories about friendship, family, and forgiveness, this is where to settle in.
