Author bio
Gillian Rubinstein was born in Potten End, near Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, England, in 1942. Her childhood moved between English villages, boarding school, and Nigeria, where her mother and stepfather lived. Those changes gave her an early sense that places, families, and ways of speaking can shift without warning.
She was a keen reader from an early age. Myths, legends, history, animals, and invented adventures all caught her attention, and she was already making up long-running stories of her own as a child.
After studying French and Spanish at Oxford, Rubinstein worked in London as an editor, journalist, and film critic. She moved to Australia in 1973, later settling in South Australia with her family. Before novels became her main work, she wrote articles, short fiction, and plays.
Her first children's novel, Space Demons, arrived in 1986. It begins with a computer game but quickly becomes a story about four young people carrying their real worries into a virtual world. Andrew, Ben, Elaine, and Mario return in Skymaze and Shinkei, making the trilogy a good fit for readers who like early virtual-reality adventures with friendship and family tension at the center.
Rubinstein's books often put young characters in places where the rules are unclear. In Beyond the Labyrinth, a troubled teenager and a visiting girl encounter an alien on an Australian beach. Galax-Arena and its sequel Terra-Farma follow siblings caught in a brutal system that turns children into entertainment. The stakes can be high, but the characters' choices and relationships do most of the work.
Animals matter in her writing, too. Foxspell follows Tod, whose unsettled family life and growing connection to foxes lead somewhere strange. The Whale's Child combines swimming, family history, and a journey between Australia and Japan. Younger readers can try the gentle, funny cat adventures of Jake and Pete, or the small-scale courage of Melanie and the Night Animal.
She doesn't treat growing up as a simple matter of learning a lesson and moving on. Her characters can be angry, frightened, stubborn, lonely, or completely unsure what they want. That gives the fantasy and science-fiction elements something solid to push against.
Rubinstein has also written plays, including adaptations of some of her stories. Her early books received major Australian children's-book recognition, including awards for Beyond the Labyrinth, Answers to Brut, and Foxspell.
In the 2000s, she began publishing Japanese-inspired fantasy as Lian Hearn, starting with Across the Nightingale Floor. That later work reached a different audience, but the interests are familiar: young people under pressure, divided loyalties, hidden worlds, and the difficult business of deciding who to trust.
