Author bio

Gillian McAllister was born in Tamworth and grew up in the Midlands, a serious reader who was also always trying to write. She has joked that her teenage years were a mix of Sweet Valley High and MSN Messenger, which tells you something about the sharp, ordinary detail that shows up in her fiction.

She studied English at the University of Birmingham, then converted to law and trained as a solicitor. Before writing became her full-time job, she worked in Birmingham law firms, and that background still shapes her books. Even when the premise turns wild, the pressure, procedure, and consequences tend to feel real.

Writing kept running alongside everything else.

McAllister has been very open about the hard years before publication. A long period of illness, including severe glandular fever and later a relapse while she was training in law, left her unable to work for stretches of time. She wrote through that uncertainty, first in bed, then on commutes, in waiting rooms, and in cold train stations after work. More than one early novel was rejected before she found the book that clicked.

Then one publisher said yes.

That book became Everything but the Truth, her 2017 debut, about a woman whose trust in her partner starts to crack after one late-night email. It was followed by Anything You Do Say, published in the US as The Choice, which plays out two versions of the same split-second decision. Soon after came No Further Questions, published in the US as The Good Sister, a story built around grief, sisterhood, and the awful question of whom to believe when a baby dies.

From there, her novels kept widening in scope while holding on to the same human center. The Evidence Against You goes back to family history and buried doubt. How to Disappear turns witness protection into a story about what a mother will give up to keep her daughter safe. That Night traps a family inside the fallout of a cover-up that was meant to protect one of their own.

Her widest-known book so far is Wrong Place, Wrong Time, which starts with a mother watching her son commit a murder and then sends her backward through time to stop it. After that came Just Another Missing Person and Famous Last Words, both of which keep doing what McAllister does so well: taking a high-stakes setup and pinning it to marriage, motherhood, guilt, and loyalty.

That is the thread through most of her work. She likes ordinary people in impossible situations. She likes moral knots, family secrets, and the moment when doing the right thing is no longer simple. Readers who come for the thriller plot tend to stay for the emotional mess underneath it.

She lives in Birmingham, England, and now writes full-time. She also co-hosts the Honest Authors podcast. By this point, her career looks less like an overnight success and more like years of stubborn work finally paying off.
