Series background & context
Rosemary Simpson's Gilded Age Mystery series follows Prudence MacKenzie and Geoffrey Hunter through a changing New York at the end of the nineteenth century. The books are historical mysteries, but they are also stories about who gets heard, who gets protected, and who is left to fend for themselves when money and influence rule the city.
Prudence begins the series as a wealthy young woman still reeling from the death of her father. She has inherited more than money from him, including a respect for logic and a determination to question easy answers. Geoffrey is a former Pinkerton agent with investigative experience, and their first case brings them together after Prudence's fiancé dies during the Great Blizzard of 1888.
They make a good team.
As the series continues, Prudence pushes toward a legal career at a time when women face serious barriers to professional life. Geoffrey brings contacts, practical experience, and a willingness to enter places Prudence has rarely had to see. Together, they build Hunter and MacKenzie Investigative Law, taking cases that connect polished social rooms with the city's working-class neighborhoods, tenements, and criminal underworld.
The books move forward from 1888 into the early 1890s, so reading in publication order lets the professional partnership and personal bond between Prudence and Geoffrey develop naturally. Each case has its own mystery, though, making individual books approachable. The first, What the Dead Leave Behind, is the best place to meet the pair and understand the pressures surrounding Prudence's inheritance and independence.
Gilded Age New York matters as much as the clues. Simpson uses the city's wealth, corruption, crowded streets, reform movements, and rigid social rules to give every investigation real stakes. The series also visits the Georgia coast and Niagara Falls, while later cases take Prudence and Geoffrey into Chinatown, the theater world, and the competitive business of high fashion.
The tone is suspenseful rather than cozy. Murders often expose larger problems, including violence against women, exploitation of children, racial injustice, and the harsh divide between rich and poor. Real historical figures, including Jacob Riis and Nellie Bly, appear alongside fictional characters without taking over the central mystery.
Expect clever investigations, a steady romantic thread, and a heroine who refuses to stay in the safe role society has chosen for her.
