Gideon Sable Books in Order

The Gideon Sable books are supernatural heists, which tells you a lot right away. Gideon is a thief, a con man, and a self-appointed nuisance to the worst people in hidden London. He specializes in stealing things that should not be stealable, identities, haunted objects, impossible treasures, and whatever else powerful people thought they had locked away for good.

Even the name Gideon Sable is part of the act. The man using it has already stolen at least one life for himself, and Green wisely keeps some of that mystery in place. Gideon is charming, slippery, and very good at sounding amused while he is standing next to something that wants to kill him. The books work because he is never alone for long. He needs crews, and crews mean personalities, grudges, and plans that go wrong in entertaining ways.

Annie Anybody is the heart of it.

Around Gideon and Annie, Green builds a rotating team of specialists and misfits, fighters in impossible armor, ghosts, wild cards, werewolves, and other useful complications. The heist structure gives the books a clean rhythm. First comes the impossible target. Then the recruitment. Then the bad plan, the worse plan, and the moment where Gideon has to reveal he was running a different con all along.

The targets help keep the series fresh. One book goes after a nightmare casino. Another turns on a stolen relic linked to the sirens. Another sends the crew into a government dumping ground for supernatural and extraterrestrial horrors near Bath. The jobs are flashy, but Green also keeps the stakes personal. Gideon tends to steal from people who richly deserve it, and revenge, loyalty, or rescue usually matters as much as the prize itself.

If you like Green at his most playful, this series is a good fit. It has the speed and hidden-world weirdness of his urban fantasy, but the mood is lighter on its feet than Nightside or Secret Histories. There is still danger, plenty of it, but the engine here is the caper, watching a criminal crew try to outthink monsters, magnates, and the universe itself, preferably while looking stylish about it.
