Author bio

It is hard to imagine a more dramatic start to a life than the one Andy McNab experienced. Abandoned as a baby in a Harrods carrier bag on the steps of Guy’s Hospital, he didn't have an easy beginning. He grew up in South London, where he struggled to find his path. Like many young men in his position, he drifted into petty crime and trouble.

It looked like things might go wrong for him permanently.

However, McNab found a way out. At sixteen, he enlisted in the British Army, starting with the Royal Green Jackets. This decision changed everything. He found discipline and purpose, eventually setting his sights on the Special Air Service (SAS). Passing the selection process for the SAS is notoriously difficult, requiring extreme physical and mental resilience. McNab didn't just pass; he thrived.

For ten years, he lived a life that most people only see in movies. He served in both covert and overt special operations across five continents. His work required him to move through the shadows, operating in high-stakes environments where one mistake could be fatal.

The world eventually learned his name because of the 1991 Gulf War. McNab commanded the famous Bravo Two Zero patrol, an eight-man team dropped deep behind enemy lines in Iraq. Their mission was to destroy underground communication links and hunt for mobile Scud missile launchers.

Things did not go according to plan. The patrol was compromised, leading to a desperate attempt to escape across the desert toward the Syrian border.

During this pursuit, McNab was captured. For weeks, he endured brutal torture at the hands of his captors. It was a test of endurance that few could imagine, let alone survive. When he was finally released and returned home, his bravery and leadership during that ordeal were recognized officially. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM). By the time he left the SAS, he was the British Army’s most highly decorated serving soldier.

Transitioning to civilian life, McNab turned his experiences into a new career. He burst onto the publishing scene with Bravo Two Zero, a non-fiction account of the failed patrol. The book became an immediate international bestseller, gripping readers with its raw honesty.

But McNab didn't stop at non-fiction. He realized his background gave him a unique edge in writing thrillers. He launched the Nick Stone series with the novel Remote Control.

What makes his fiction stand out is the authenticity. Readers aren't just getting a story; they are getting a look at how special operations actually work. He writes about the "tradecraft" of being a soldier—the surveillance, the planning, and the waiting—with as much detail as the action scenes. His books, especially the Nick Stone novels, are known for their unvarnished look at the toll this life takes. He doesn't shy away from the physical pain or the psychological scars that come with the job.

Despite his fame as an author, McNab lives with a reminder of his past life every day. Due to the highly sensitive nature of his work with the SAS and his intelligence background, he maintains a strict level of anonymity. You won't see his face on his book jackets. In public appearances or TV interviews, he often conceals his face or stays in the shadows.

From a carrier bag on a hospital step to the top of the bestseller lists, Andy McNab’s journey is unique. He remains one of the most authoritative voices in military fiction today.
