by Jill Santopolo
2008
Fourth-grade sleuth Alec Flint gets his first big case when the Christopher Columbus exhibit disappears from the local museum. With new classmate Gina, he follows clues the grown-ups may have missed.
Series background & context
The Alec Flint, Super Sleuth books are middle-grade mysteries about a fourth grader who is practicing to become a detective. Alec is observant, earnest, and very serious about the tools of the trade, from detective pens to clothes with enough pockets for clues. His father, Officer Flint, works in local law enforcement, which gives Alec a close-up view of cases he is absolutely not supposed to take over.
Naturally, he takes notes.
The first book, The Nina, the Pinta, and the Vanishing Treasure, gives Alec a case big enough for any grown-up detective. The Christopher Columbus exhibit at the American History Museum has vanished, and Alec is sure the details matter. At school, he meets Gina Rossi, a new classmate who likes puzzles and codes. She becomes the partner he did not know he needed.
The series has a classic kid-detective shape. Alec sees things adults miss, jumps to some funny conclusions, and gradually learns that a good partner can make a case stronger. Gina is not just a sidekick. She has her own questions, her own strengths, and her own interest in solving what is going on around them.
In The Ransom Note Blues, the mystery gets stranger. Gina's mother, a newspaper reporter, receives a ransom note saying that something belonging to the whole town has been stolen. The hard part is that Alec and Gina first have to figure out what the missing thing even is, all while schoolwork and an art unit on Jackson Pollock keep interrupting the investigation.
Alec's world is built for readers who like clues, codes, museum puzzles, school scenes, and mysteries without scary violence. The tone is funny and energetic, with enough real detective work to make young readers feel invited into the case.
Start with The Nina, the Pinta, and the Vanishing Treasure. It introduces Alec, Gina, Officer Flint, and the way the series mixes history, school life, and puzzle-solving. Then move to The Ransom Note Blues for a broader town mystery and more of the Alec-and-Gina team.
