Series background & context

The Genie McQueen series returns to the supernatural world of Secret McQueen, but gives the spotlight to Secret's cousin Genie. Genie is a werewolf and a witch, raised apart from much of her pack while trying to understand powers that make her useful, vulnerable, and hard to place.

New Orleans gives these books their own flavor. The city brings heat, old magic, pack politics, haunted houses, and a setting where the supernatural feels close to everyday life. Genie has family connections to powerful people, but that does not mean she gets an easy path. Leadership comes with responsibilities she never expected to inherit.

In Bayou Blues, Genie is pushed toward a bigger role in the New Orleans werewolf community. She has to find out what kind of leader she wants to be while navigating old relationships, magical trouble, and the pressure of a family name. Her blend of wolf instincts and witchcraft means that the problems drawn to her are rarely ordinary.

Being chosen is not the same as being ready.

The following books widen the series' mix of mystery and paranormal politics. In Black Magic Bayou, Genie faces the disappearance of sorority students and a problem only her magical side may be able to solve. The stories also develop her bond with werewolf outcast Wilder Shaw, whose presence offers support but does not make the dangerous work disappear.

Readers can expect urban fantasy action, romantic tension, supernatural investigations, and a heroine learning to claim authority on her own terms. The series shares background with Secret McQueen, but Genie's story has its own cast, city, and concerns. Familiarity with Secret helps, yet Bayou Blues is built to introduce Genie as a lead in her own right.

Start with Bayou Blues, then continue through Black Magic Bayou, Black-Hearted Devil, and Blood in the Bayou. The books reward reading in order because Genie's relationships, magical skills, and standing within the pack all develop across the series.
