The Gemma Lincoln books are adult crime novels with a strong Sydney pulse. Gemma is a private investigator, and an ex-cop, who runs a security and surveillance business and keeps getting pulled from routine work into cases that are anything but routine.

She is capable, stubborn, and good at reading when a story does not add up. She is also not written as untouchable. Lord gives her fear, anger, divided loyalties, and a real personal history, so the books feel more lived-in than puzzle-only mysteries.

That history matters. In Feeding the Demons, a staged effigy and a serial killer case force Gemma back toward the old wound at the center of her life, the murder of her mother and the conviction of her father. Across the series, Lord keeps letting present investigations knock against buried family damage, which gives the books extra weight.

The cases are broad and messy in a good way. Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing moves through Kings Cross street murders, a suspicious death, drugs, and sabotage inside Gemma's own operation. Spiking The Girl starts with a missing schoolgirl and opens into a double murder wrapped in silence. Shattered asks whether the police are protecting one of their own after a senior officer is killed. These are not tidy village crimes. They belong to the city.

Sydney is one of the main characters.

Gemma does not work alone, even when she tries to. Detective Sergeant Angie McDonald is an important presence, and Steve Brannigan brings both help and complication. Lord likes parallel cases, side investigations, and the feeling that trouble is coming from three directions at once, so the books tend to move on several tracks at the same time.

The tone is dark, but not cold. There is forensic detail, real violence, and a lot of attention to how power works, especially around women and girls. But there is also friendship, wit, and the sense that Gemma keeps going because backing away would mean letting the wrong people win.

If you want an Australian PI series that mixes personal history with hard cases, this is the shape of it. Lord writes Gemma as smart and bruised, practical and deeply human. That balance is what gives the series its grip.
