Dark Company

by Lincoln Child

1984

Author bio

Lincoln Child was born in Westport, Connecticut, in 1957, and although he left almost immediately, he has long treated it as his hometown. He started writing early, the kind of kid who was already making up stories in grade school and kept going from there. By his teens he had produced an earnest science fiction novel and a very long fantasy manuscript, which tells you something about both his imagination and his stubbornness.

The writing impulse never really went away.

After studying English at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, he moved to New York in 1979 looking for work in publishing. He landed at St. Martin's Press as an editorial assistant and worked his way up quickly, moving through several editorial roles before becoming a full editor in 1984. It was practical training of the best kind: deadlines, manuscripts, structure, and the day-to-day work of figuring out why one story moves and another stalls.

At St. Martin's he edited a wide range of books, from popular fiction to dense nonfiction, and worked with authors including James Herriot and M. M. Kaye. He also leaned hard into horror, editing collections such as Dark Company, Dark Banquet, and the Tales of the Dark volumes, and helping launch the publisher's mass-market horror line. That mix of old ghost-story atmosphere and brisk commercial pacing would later show up all through his fiction.

Then he took a sharp turn.

In 1987 Child left publishing for systems analysis and programming work at MetLife. On paper it looked like a complete career change. In practice, it fit another side of him. He had been interested in computers from a young age, and the technical world gave him fresh material as well as some distance from the book business. It also, by his own account, nudged him back toward writing.

One of the key turning points came through Douglas Preston. Child had edited Preston's museum book Dinosaurs in the Attic, and later suggested they try a thriller set in a museum. That idea became Relic in 1995, the novel that launched both a long partnership and the strange, durable world of Agent Pendergast. From there came books like The Cabinet of Curiosities, Brimstone, and many more. Readers tend to come for the creepy premises, the locked-room puzzles, and the way the books mix research with pure page-turning momentum.

His solo novels show a slightly different side of the same mind. Utopia, Death Match, Deep Storm, The Third Gate, The Forgotten Room, and Chrysalis all take a contained setting, add a sharp idea from science or technology, and then slowly make it alarming. He is especially good at writing experts under pressure, people who think clearly right up until the moment the facts stop making sense. The Jeremy Logan books push that even further, using an investigator of strange phenomena to test the line between the explainable and the eerie.

Today, Child has long made his home in New Jersey with his wife and daughter. He still comes across as someone with one foot in literature and the other in circuitry, equally drawn to old ghost stories, modern systems, music, history, and the mechanics of how things work. That combination is a big part of why his fiction feels the way it does. However wild the premise gets, there is usually a calm, methodical intelligence behind it, quietly inviting you deeper in.
