Ged Adamson grew up in Liverpool, where drawing and music were both part of daily life from early on. As a kid he was always sketching, listening to songs, and making up tunes, which helps explain why his picture books often feel lively and rhythmic even when the stories are quiet.

Before books became his main job, Adamson worked in music. He composed for adverts, trailers, television, and short films, and after moving to London he also picked up art jobs here and there, including storyboard work and magazine cartoons. That mix of sound, timing, and visual comedy still shows in the way his stories land a joke or turn a page.

He always wanted to write and illustrate picture books.

The real shift came when he put together a rough PDF for a story called Elsie Clarke and the Vampire Hairdresser. That project helped him find his agent, Isabel Atherton, and gave him a proper way into children's publishing. Not long after, Douglas, You Need Glasses! was picked up in the US, and that warm, funny story about a short-sighted dog became the book that really kickstarted his career.

That book also drew on something personal. Adamson has said he struggled with his eyesight when he was young and put off getting glasses until he was a teenager. When he finally did, he had the kind of startling moment many readers remember, suddenly seeing the detail in leaves and the world snapping into focus. It is easy to feel that firsthand memory behind Douglas's mix-ups and eventual delight.

Humour is usually the door in.

Across books like Shark Dog!, Bird Hugs, Scribbly, A Fox Found a Box, and Brianosaurus, Adamson keeps coming back to characters who feel a little out of step before they find their place. A shark-dog misses home. A bird with awkwardly long wings discovers what they are actually for. A lonely girl draws herself a friend. A frog tries on a dinosaur identity before realising he does not need to become something else to matter. Readers who like funny pictures, gentle reassurance, and a slightly odd idea taken seriously tend to click with his work.

He also likes stories where the emotional stakes are real even when the setup is silly. That is true of Ava and the Rainbow, which turns wonder into a lesson about not taking beautiful things for granted, and of I Want to Grow, a small, funny story about impatience and comparison. Even his earlier books, including Meet the McKaws, have that same interest in family friction, feeling left out, and finding a way back to connection.

These days he lives in London with his partner Helen and their son Rex. Music is still part of his life, and he has spoken about how much he enjoys sitting at the piano or guitar and simply making things up. That feels very in character for his books too. They are playful, handmade, and happiest when imagination gets to wander a little.
