Gamble Brothers (Jessica Hall) Books in Order

The Gamble Brothers books are contemporary romantic suspense novels set in New Orleans. There are two published stories in the sequence, Into the Fire and Heat of the Moment, and both pair a dangerous criminal case with people who would rather not revisit their pasts.

New Orleans does a lot of the heavy lifting here. The French Quarter, the summer heat, local politics, police work, and old family connections all shape the action. These are not quiet small-town mysteries. The investigations move through a city where public reputations matter, and a fire or a body can pull a whole network of people into the open.

Into the Fire begins with Isabel “Sable” Duchesne escaping a warehouse blaze in the French Quarter. A prominent political candidate is dead, Sable is the only survivor, and the case lands with homicide detective J.D. Gamble. That would be hard enough if J.D. and Sable had not once been in love, then spent years apart with very different versions of why their relationship ended.

The first book uses that old hurt as part of the suspense. J.D. has to investigate a woman he still knows too well, while Sable has good reasons to be wary of the police and even warier of him. As threats close in, the story asks whether either of them can separate the past from what is happening now.

The fire is only the beginning.

In Heat of the Moment, the focus shifts to J.D.'s brother, City Fire Marshal Cortland Gamble, and police detective Terri Vincent. A serial arsonist known as the Torcher is targeting New Orleans businesses, and the case becomes more personal when people connected to a crime family are killed. Cort must pursue the arsonist while facing pressure from several directions, including people who want their own form of justice.

Terri is pulled into the investigation as well, despite her effort to keep some distance from Cort. Their attraction has been simmering for a while, and the case forces them into close quarters at exactly the wrong time. Like the first novel, this is a story about two people trying to do a difficult job while their unresolved feelings make every decision messier.

Read the books in order if you can. Into the Fire introduces the Gamble family, Terri, and the relationships that carry into the second novel. Readers who enjoy police procedurals with a strong romantic thread, arson investigations, former lovers, and a very specific New Orleans atmosphere will know what to expect.
