Author bio
G. Willow Wilson was born in New Jersey in 1982 and spent much of her childhood growing up in Boulder, Colorado. She has talked about being the kind of kid who loved comics, fantasy, pop culture, and tabletop games, and writing was there early too. Long before publishing deals or superhero credits, she was already building a life around stories.
At Boston University, where she studied history, she started finding her way into professional writing. One of her early jobs was music criticism for the Boston weekly Weekly Dig, which is a very real writer's apprenticeship: short deadlines, sharp opinions, and no time to wait around for inspiration. It gave her practice, discipline, and a clearer sense that writing could be more than a private habit.
Then her world got bigger.
Wilson's interest in Islam deepened in late adolescence and early adulthood, and after college she moved to Cairo. There she taught English, worked as a journalist, and built the life that later became the memoir The Butterfly Mosque. That book is still one of the clearest windows into her nonfiction voice, curious, candid, funny in places, and unwilling to flatten complicated questions about faith, culture, love, or belonging into easy slogans.
Those years in Egypt shaped the fiction that first brought her wide attention. Cairo mixes modern city life with folklore and political tension. Alif the Unseen goes even further, folding hacking, state surveillance, Islamic tradition, and jinn lore into a fantasy thriller that feels both contemporary and ancient at once. The novel won the World Fantasy Award, and it also shows one of Wilson's recurring strengths: she likes characters who are clever, under pressure, and a little in over their heads.
She is just as comfortable in capes as in prose.
For many readers, Wilson's signature comic is Ms. Marvel, which she co-created with editor Sana Amanat and artist Adrian Alphona. Kamala Khan, a Muslim teenager from Jersey City who suddenly gains superpowers, gave Wilson room to write about family, school, faith, fandom, friendship, and neighborhood responsibility without losing the fun of a superhero book. Readers tend to love how grounded Kamala feels. Even when the stakes get huge, the story never forgets homework, awkward crushes, community politics, or who is expected home for dinner.
That same ability to join big ideas to everyday emotion runs through much of Wilson's later work. The Bird King is a historical fantasy set in the last days of Muslim Spain, but its questions about freedom, loyalty, and escape feel immediate. Invisible Kingdom turns a space opera into a story about belief, commerce, and who gets exploited by powerful systems. Her runs on Wonder Woman, X-Men, and Poison Ivy show the same instincts in a different key, more mythic, more feral, sometimes darker, but still deeply interested in people trying to live with the consequences of power.
Across formats, Wilson returns to borderlands. Cultural borderlands, political borderlands, spiritual borderlands, even the border between the seen world and the unseen one. She likes outsiders, translators, runaways, believers, doubters, and people whose maps keep changing under their feet. That gives her work a restless energy. It is adventurous, but also personal.
Wilson now lives in Seattle.
