Series background & context

Frontier Matches continues the Washington Territory world Regina Scott built in Frontier Bachelors, but it does so with a slightly newer generation and an even stronger sense of community. These books are still western romances, still clean and hopeful, and still shaped by the practical fact that building a town often means building families first.

The setting remains important. Wallin Landing and the surrounding settlements are places where everyone notices who has arrived, who needs help, and who is pretending not to need either. In The Perfect Mail-Order Bride, a plainer sister steps into the place meant for a runaway bride and discovers that honesty may cost her the future she never expected to want. Her Frontier Sweethearts begins when a woman starting a restaurant is handed a baby and told, in effect, to figure it out. Frontier Cinderella has fun with appearance and expectation, while The Schoolmarm's Convenient Marriage returns to one of Scott’s favorite questions, how a practical arrangement can turn into real affection.

These books are full of people making do.

That is part of their appeal. The heroines work. They teach, cook, care for children, keep accounts, and solve problems. The heroes are often decent but wary men who need time to understand that partnership does not weaken them. Around them is a settlement full of relatives, employers, deputies, loggers, and neighbors who are forever nudging events along.

If Frontier Bachelors feels a little broader in scope, Frontier Matches feels more settled and domestic in the best way. The danger is still there, but the strongest through line is the community itself, a place where a surprising bride, an abandoned child, or one rash rumor can change two lives at once. Readers who like mail-order mishaps, convenience marriages, and westerns with a cozy small-town pulse will probably be very happy here.
