Freya Marske is an Australian writer and podcaster whose fantasy blends magic, mystery, romance, and the social rules that can make a simple choice feel dangerous. She has said she was always a big reader, and she traces one early publishing moment to a poem printed in the children’s section of a city newspaper when she was five. It was an early hint of a lifelong habit: reading widely, then wanting to make stories of her own.

Marske wrote on and off for years before her novels arrived. In her twenties, she spent a lot of time writing fanfiction, using it to practice character work, pacing, dialogue, and the satisfying mechanics of a romance. She has spoken plainly about that period as part of learning how to finish stories, rather than a detour from the work that came later.

Then she began turning those skills toward original fiction.

Before her debut novel, her shorter work appeared in magazines and anthologies, including Analog Science Fiction and Fact and Andromeda Spaceways. In 2020, she received the Australian National SF Ditmar Award for Best New Talent. These early publications show another side of her work: an interest in speculative ideas, sharp relationships, and what people will risk when private wants collide with a bigger problem.

In 2021, A Marvellous Light introduced Robin Blyth, an ordinary civil servant accidentally assigned to deal with Britain’s hidden magical world. It also began The Last Binding, a trilogy that combines an ongoing conspiracy with a different central romance in each volume. Readers who enjoy old houses, secret rules, prickly partnerships, and problems that grow more dangerous the closer people get to the truth will find plenty to follow.

The magic is never only background decoration.

A Restless Truth moves to an ocean liner for a murder mystery and the unlikely partnership between Maud Blyth and performer Violet Debenham. A Power Unbound returns to the larger threat facing Britain’s magicians, while putting Jack Alston and writer-thief Alan Ross at its center. Across the trilogy, readers get secret societies, troubling inheritances, hidden bargains, and relationships that must survive the damage caused by old power.

Marske has also stepped outside that series without leaving behind romance, trouble, or magic. Swordcrossed is a secondary-world fantasy romance about wool merchant Matti Jay and hired swordsman Luca Piere, with an arranged marriage and family finances adding pressure. Cinder House, a short Gothic reworking of Cinderella, follows a murdered girl whose ghost is bound to her father’s home.

Her books often make room for people boxed in by class, family duty, old injuries, or the rules of their world. They also leave space for jokes, yearning, messy friendships, and characters who have to become honest before they can build a life with anyone else.
