The books are best read in order because the second novel builds directly on the relationships, secrets, and threats set up in the first. Readers who enjoy history but do not want a textbook will find a story full of momentum, with real events forming the pressure around the characters.

The tone is darker than Gardner’s younger books. There are frightening situations and the consequences of revolution are taken seriously. Still, the heart of the series is Yann’s determination to protect the people he loves, even when courage means returning to the places he most needs to escape.
