Fairy Detective Agency: Wings & Co Books in Order

The Wings & Co books are comic fantasy mysteries set in the odd little town of Podgy Bottom. At the center is Emily Vole. As a baby, Emily was found in a hatbox at an airport. Years later, she inherits an old shop, a bunch of golden keys, and a talking cat named Fidget from her neighbour, Mrs String. The shop was once home to Wings & Co, a fairy detective agency, and Emily soon finds herself restoring it to work.

Her partners are a strange but useful crew. Fidget has plenty to say, while Buster is a grumpy fairy detective with a serious approach to magical crime. Together, they investigate the hidden fairy world sitting just beside everyday life.

Operation Bunny opens the series, as Emily discovers her inheritance and faces the witch Harpella. In Three Pickled Herrings, the agency’s first proper cases point toward someone stealing people’s luck. The Vanishing of Billy Buckle sends the team to the seaside to investigate a missing giant, a murder, and a stolen diamond. The Matchbox Mysteries brings Halloween trouble, including matchbox-sized cars and a giant purple rabbit. In The Flying Carpet Thief, a lost leprechaun, airborne carpets, and Fidget’s disappearance put Emily and Buster under pressure.

The tone is brisk, absurd, and full of made-up expressions, unusual names, and visual jokes. The plots have clues to follow, but the fun comes equally from the team’s arguments, the strange rules of fairy business, and the sense that magic is always one missed turn away.
