Author bio
Frances Evesham writes cosy mysteries and historical crime stories rooted in the landscape of Somerset, the English county she now calls home. She lives in a small seaside town that looks a lot like her fictional Exham-on-Sea, with wide beaches, a distinctive lighthouse and plenty of village gossip.
Her path into crime fiction began with a walk on the beach. Coming across a quirky nine-legged Victorian lighthouse, she started imagining what might happen if someone found a body in its shadow. That idea became Murder at the Lighthouse, the first of her Exham-on-Sea mysteries.
Evesham loves classic whodunnits and grew up reading and watching Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple and Murder She Wrote. You can feel that influence in Libby Forest's investigations in Murder on the Levels, Murder on the Tor and later books, where clues are fair, suspects are many and the solution turns on a small but telling detail.
Alongside her seaside series, she writes the Ham Hill Murder Mysteries, set in the village of Lower Hembrow beneath the ancient hill that gives the books their name. Stories such as A Village Murder, A Racing Murder and A Harvest Murder follow a group of middle-aged friends who juggle work, family and slow-burn romance while uncovering what really lies behind village scandals.
Evesham also has a long-standing fascination with the Victorians. Her Thatcham Hall novels, beginning with An Independent Woman and Danger at Thatcham Hall, take readers into country houses full of hidden rooms, rigid rules and women who are far less meek than society expects. She is especially interested in the way Victorian women balanced ambition, duty and desire.
Before she wrote full time, she worked in a mix of jobs that quietly feed her fiction. She has been a speech therapist, a road sweeper and an RAF wife, and spent years in the criminal courts supporting vulnerable witnesses and defendants. Watching real cases unfold from both the dock and the witness box gave her a sharp sense of motive, opportunity and the small pressures that push people over the edge.
That background also shapes her books for younger readers. In Dragon Ring and Ben's Underground Adventure she uses clear, friendly language and plenty of action to hook children who are just getting confident with reading, including those who find traditional pages challenging. Dragons, pirates, underground tunnels and high stakes keep the pages turning.
Away from the desk, Evesham collects historical trivia, enjoys time with her grandchildren and likes to cook with a glass of wine in one hand and a bunch of chillies in the other. She jokes that she also collects poison recipes, though only for fictional use. When she is not plotting new puzzles for Libby Forest or the Ham Hill gang, she is often out walking the Somerset countryside, thinking up the next body that might disturb its peace.
