Series background & context

Forever in Their Thrall is one of Foxglove's darker series. It opens in a controlled, frightening little world where Alissa has grown up inside the Order of the Blessed, an oppressive religious community that keeps women obedient, ashamed, and easy to manage. She knows almost nothing outside those rules.

Then she runs.

The men who catch her are not a rescue in any simple sense. Rayner, Silvus, Jie, and Thom are vampires, and not gentle ones at first. They tell Alissa they have loved her across centuries and lifetimes, and that she has always come back to them. That is the central tension of the trilogy. Their devotion is overwhelming, romantic, and sometimes deeply unsettling. Foxglove is not trying to make these men feel safe from page one. She is trying to make Alissa, and the reader, work through what it means to be wanted so completely.

The story uses reincarnation, stolen memory, and old curses to keep that tension alive. Alissa is not just escaping one abusive system. She is trying to decide whether the alternative is freedom, another kind of possession, or something more complicated than either. The Order does not let her go easily, and Father Joshua remains a threat even when the geography changes. Later books push harder on memory loss, buried history, and the cost of finally knowing who she has been.

This is also one of Foxglove's more gothic-feeling series. The atmosphere is heavy with obsession, secrecy, and old grief. The romance is high-intensity and possessive, and the books include m/m dynamics within the vampire group. Even when the characters are building something more loving, the trilogy keeps that edge. These are not light paranormal comfort reads.

If that sounds appealing, this series offers a lot. Alissa grows steadily stronger, and the emotional payoff depends on that growth. The books are not only about vampires claiming her. They are about her learning how to claim herself, even inside a bond that was waiting for her long before she understood it. Read the trilogy in order. It is very much one continuous story, and the final volume works best when you have felt all the push and pull that comes before it.
