Series background & context

The Firemane Saga marks Raymond E. Feist’s return with a completely new setting: the world of Garn. While it eventually connects to the larger Riftwar mythos, it stands on its own as a tale of betrayal, hidden heirs, assassins and a world sliding toward war.

The story begins in King of Ashes with five great kingdoms that have maintained a precarious balance for generations. That balance is shattered when four of them conspire to destroy the fifth, Ithrace, the Kingdom of Flames, and kill its ruler, Steveren Langene—the Firemane. Amid the slaughter, a single infant heir is smuggled away. Baron Daylon Dumarch, a minor lord with keen political instincts, realizes what the child represents and quietly arranges for him to be raised in secrecy on Coaltachin, an island home to the Nocusara, legendary assassins and spies.

That child grows up as Hatushaly, or Hatu, never knowing his true lineage. Trained from youth as a hidden weapon, he learns the skills of an infiltrator while trying to carve out an identity beyond what his masters intend. Parallel to his story is that of Declan, a gifted young smith who earns the rare rank of master and rediscovers the closely guarded art of forging king’s steel. His craft makes him valuable and puts him in grave danger, forcing him into exile and pulling him toward Daylon’s troubled domains.

In Queen of Storms, the fragile stability Hatu and his wife Hava have built in the backwater town of Beran’s Hill is shattered by an overwhelming attack. Their cover identities as innkeepers collapse, and both are thrust back into the worlds of espionage and war they half‑hoped to leave behind. At sea and in distant ports, Hava discovers her own talent for piracy and subterfuge, earning a reputation that will matter greatly in the final volume.

Master of Furies draws the threads together. War sweeps Marquensas and beyond as old betrayals and new ambitions converge. Declan, hollowed by personal loss, throws himself into the fight, while Daylon wrestles with the cost of the choices he made years earlier. Hatu and Hava find their fates tied not just to their homeland but to forces that hint at connections far beyond Garn.

The tone of the Firemane books is classic Feist—court politics, found families, rough camaraderie and sudden, often brutal turns of fortune—but Garn has its own flavor. The twin continents of Tembria feel distinct, with different faiths, merchant cultures and military traditions. Magic exists, but in the early going it sits more in the background, letting intrigue and character drive the story.

For readers new to Feist, the Firemane Saga works as a fresh entry point. For long‑time fans, it offers the pleasure of seeing a veteran writer build a new world from the ground up, knowing that, in time, its storms will cross paths with Midkemia’s.
