Fiona Mozley Books in Order

Fiona Mozley was born in East London and raised in York, and that mix of city life and northern landscape still runs through her work. She studied history at Cambridge, then later returned to medieval studies, so the past is never far away in her fiction. Even when her novels feel very contemporary, they carry a strong sense of place and of older stories still pressing on the present.

After university, she spent time in Buenos Aires and London, working ordinary jobs while figuring out what kind of writer she wanted to be. She worked at a literary agency and at a travel center, which is the sort of practical background that suits her fiction well. Her books are interested in money, housing, class, and the basic question of how people make a life for themselves.

The beginning of Elmet came to her on an early morning train from York to London, when she realized how much she missed the landscape of home.

At the time, she was also working on a PhD in medieval studies at the University of York. She has said that the novel and the doctorate helped each other along. Academic research gave her a long view of land, power, and social order. Fiction gave her room to explore those same pressures through family life, weather, memory, and the texture of everyday speech.

Elmet, published in 2017, was the book that put her in front of a wide readership. It follows Daniel, his sister Cathy, and their fiercely protective father as they try to hold on to a handmade life on the edge of Yorkshire. Readers tend to remember its rough beauty, its closeness to the land, and the intense loyalty between the siblings. The novel was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2017, a big moment for a debut that started on a phone screen.

Her second novel, Hot Stew, arrived in 2021 and shifted from woods to Soho. The spark for that book came from a summer when she lived in a ramshackle building above a pub in central London. The novel turns a fight over a prime property into a larger story about sex work, gentrification, wealth, and the strange communities a city can hold together. It has a much broader cast than Elmet, but it returns to a familiar Mozley concern, people trying to protect a home while money and power close in.

Home, ownership, and the long shadow of history keep showing up in her work.

Her third novel, Awake Awake, is due on August 4, 2026. It follows Mary, a woman back in her hometown and struggling to make sense of memories that feel real but cannot be true. The book moves through school friendships, family history, and the political atmosphere of the 2000s and 2010s. If Elmet is her rural novel and Hot Stew her city novel, Awake Awake looks more directly at memory itself, and at how personal stories get tangled up with national ones.

Mozley now lives in Edinburgh with her partner and their dog. Across very different settings, Yorkshire woods, Soho streets, and a return to York shaped by memory, she keeps writing about people on uncertain ground. That steady interest in place, pressure, and belonging is what ties her books together.
