Series background & context

Nikki Sloane's Filthy Rich Americans series is a dark contemporary romance set in Cape Hill, a wealthy Atlantic coastal town controlled by the Hale family. The Hales have money, influence, a global bank, and a habit of treating people as pieces in a private game. Their rule is simple: win at all costs.

That rule has consequences.

The first three books tell one continuing story and should be read in sequence. The Initiation introduces Marist Northcott, whose family is in financial trouble, and Royce Hale, the seductive heir whose help comes with a price. Marist enters the Hales' world to protect her family, but every new bargain puts her deeper inside a system shaped by status, secrecy, and control.

The Obsession raises the stakes after Marist learns how little she can rely on appearances in Cape Hill. Her relationship with Royce becomes more difficult just as the family's power struggles become harder to avoid. In The Deception, Marist has learned enough about the Hales' tactics to fight back. The central tension across the trilogy is not just whether she can trust Royce. It is whether anyone can survive a family that turns love, money, and loyalty into leverage.

The series is dark, explicit, and full of betrayals, shifting alliances, and dangerous family politics. It uses the luxury of Cape Hill as more than decoration. Mansions, boardrooms, social events, and private deals all become places where the Hales can exercise control, and where outsiders have to decide what they are willing to trade for safety or influence.

Nothing stays private for long in Cape Hill.

After Marist and Royce's three-book arc, the series continues with connected standalones. The Redemption follows Macalister Hale, whose scandal has damaged his name, and Sophia Alby, a younger woman who trades in secrets and offers a possible path back. The Temptation turns to Vance Hale and a woman seeking revenge who needs access to the Hale world. These later books work best after the trilogy because they build on the family's history and reputation.

Readers should begin with The Initiation and continue through The Obsession and The Deception without skipping ahead. Then move to The Redemption and The Temptation for fresh couples with the same money-soaked, high-pressure setting. Expect powerful people making bad bargains, women who refuse to stay pawns, and romances that have to survive the Hale family's appetite for control.
