Felix Brooke Books in Order

The Felix Brooke books are historical adventures set largely in Spain, and they feel a little different from Joan Aiken's more famous work. They are less comic than Arabel and Mortimer, less openly fantastical than the Wolves books, and more grounded in travel, war, identity, and survival. Still, they share Aiken's love of danger, strong atmosphere, and young protagonists forced to grow up quickly.

Felix is the center of the trilogy. He is the orphaned son of an English soldier and a Spanish mother, and from the start he belongs awkwardly in more than one world. That split matters. The books are full of questions about home, loyalty, class, and who gets to claim you.

He is always moving.

In Go Saddle the Sea, Felix breaks away from a cold and hostile life in Spain and begins a long, perilous journey. The road gives Aiken plenty to work with: prisons, kidnappings, rough travel, sudden acts of kindness, and the constant uncertainty of where Felix can safely belong. Bridle the Wind continues the story with more danger and deeper emotional stakes, and The Teeth of the Gale brings the trilogy into the violence and instability of early nineteenth-century Spain.

These are adventure books in the old sense. People ride, flee, hide, cross borders, meet strangers, and risk everything on imperfect information. But Aiken also pays attention to inward change. Felix is not just passing through exciting episodes. He is learning who he is, and he often has to do that while cut off from comfort and certainty.

The setting is one of the series' great strengths. Spain is not a painted backdrop here. It shapes the whole mood, the politics, the travel, the danger, and the people Felix meets. The books feel dusty, windy, coastal, mountainous, and unstable in the best possible way.

This is the rare Joan Aiken series that really benefits from a straight run from beginning to end, because Felix's history and choices carry forward so strongly. If you like picaresque travel, older-style adventure, and historical fiction with real momentum, the Felix Brooke trilogy is well worth your time.
