Far-Flung Adventures Books in Order

The Far-Flung Adventures books by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell are connected stand-alone stories set in the same eccentric fantasy world. Each book follows a different child, but the places, inventions, oddball adults, and sense of offbeat adventure link them together.

Fergus Crane begins with a boy whose life seems almost ordinary. He lives with his mother, helps in her bakery, and attends lessons aboard a school ship. Then a flying box delivers a warning from an uncle he has never met, and Fergus is pulled into a rescue mission involving pirate teachers, a mechanical horse, penguin helpers, and a faraway island.

In Corby Flood, Corby and her family board the ramshackle cruise ship S.S. Euphonia. Corby is observant, quiet, and good at collecting clues. When she notices suspicious passengers, a forbidden cargo hold, and a group called the Brotherhood of Clowns, she cannot resist finding out what the ship is really carrying.

Then comes Hugo Pepper.

Hugo was raised in the Frozen North after losing his parents to polar bears. A special compass leads him toward Firefly Square, where he finds new friends, buried secrets, and a threat that reaches beyond his unusual childhood. Like the other books, his adventure is full of strange objects, unlikely allies, and a world that operates by its own cheerful logic.

The tone is lighter than The Edge Chronicles, though there are still villains and genuine danger. These books enjoy their own oddness. School ships, talking animals, improbable relatives, snowmen with unusual feet, and eccentric travelers can appear without anybody stopping to explain them for long.

The young heroes are what hold the stories together. Fergus, Corby, and Hugo are not the same kind of child, but each has to look closely, trust their instincts, and act when grown-ups are either absent or involved in the trouble. Their adventures reward curiosity more than physical strength.

Riddell's illustrations are a major part of the experience, filling the pages with expressive faces, elaborate machines, and details that make the world seem both old-fashioned and completely invented.

Start with Fergus Crane, then read Corby Flood and Hugo Pepper. Each can be enjoyed alone, but the order gives the best introduction to the shared setting. These are ideal for readers who like whimsical mysteries, inventive illustrations, and adventures that are strange in the nicest possible way.
