Series background & context

The Family Secrets series follows the O'Rourkes, a seemingly solid Seattle family whose past refuses to stay buried. Across The Betrayed Wife and The Bad Sister, Kevin O'Brien links domestic drama, campus legend, and serial murder into one long, unnerving arc.

In The Betrayed Wife, dance instructor Sheila O'Rourke is doing her best to overlook her husband Dylan's flirting and keep their three kids grounded in a new city. Then Eden, a tough sixteen year old who has been shadowing Sheila, arrives claiming to be Dylan's daughter from an old affair. A bizarre death in Eden's past mirrors something Sheila has never told anyone, and anonymous texts plus odd noises next door make the O'Rourke home feel less like a refuge and more like a trap.

The second book, The Bad Sister, jumps ahead and shifts the action to a small college town outside Chicago. Hannah O'Rourke is trying to reinvent herself far from Seattle, only to find that her volatile half sister Eden has enrolled at the same school and been assigned to the same off campus bungalow. The house itself is infamous, decades earlier it was the site of the Immaculate Conception Murders, a campus killing spree that still haunts a few locals.

Through Hannah, Eden, and journalism professor Ellie Goodwin, the story circles around that fifty year old case and the media frenzy it created. When new deaths begin to echo the old crime scene details, Ellie senses a copycat at work, yet administrators and police are reluctant to believe that history is repeating. The O'Rourke sisters, already notorious for what happened back in Seattle, are suddenly surrounded by whispers, suspicions, and cameras once again.

O'Brien uses the two novels to explore what it means to grow up under the weight of secrets. Parents hide past choices, siblings compete for the role of the good child, and victimhood is not always as clear cut as it looks from the outside. The tension comes as much from shifting loyalties and half told stories as from the knife in the dark.

Although each book has its own central mystery, reading them in order lets you watch the family fracture and reconfigure over time, from a stylish Seattle neighborhood to a Midwestern campus where rumor moves faster than the truth. The tone mixes intimate family moments with high stakes thriller set pieces, so you spend as much time inside the O'Rourkes' heads as you do in crime scenes.

If you like domestic suspense that widens into a larger conspiracy, and you enjoy following the same characters as new dangers find them, the Family Secrets series offers a complete, two part story that pays off threads planted from the very first pages.
