Series background & context

The Family Fortune Mystery series takes place in Crystal Haven, Michigan, a small western Michigan town that welcomes visitors looking for psychics, séances, and a little contact with the spirit world. For the Fortune family, though, unusual abilities are not a tourist attraction. They are family business.

Clytemnestra Fortune, who goes by Clyde, would rather not be part of it.

Clyde is a former police officer on leave from her job in Ann Arbor after a traumatic experience. She returns to Crystal Haven hoping to regroup, take on some dog-walking work, and avoid the pressure to accept the psychic abilities she has spent much of her life resisting. Her mother, Rose, reads tarot cards. Her Aunt Vi calls herself a pet psychic. Clyde’s teenage nephew Seth is often nearby, along with a memorable collection of animals.

The first book, Pall in the Family, starts when a local psychic is murdered and leaves behind a frightened Shih Tzu. Clyde’s old flame, detective Mac McKenzie, is assigned to the case, making her return home even more complicated. Her police instincts, personal knowledge of the town, and unwanted flashes of insight make it difficult for her to stay out of the investigation.

Crystal Haven gives the series its playful paranormal frame, but the mysteries still depend on suspects, motives, old grudges, and careful digging. The books balance murder cases with family disagreements, local gossip, and Clyde’s uneasy effort to decide what role she wants in the Fortune household. Mac’s relationship with Clyde develops gradually rather than taking over the cases.

The stories also make room for the seasons. Be Careful What You Witch For brings a fall festival, a witch-themed ritual, and danger for one of Clyde’s friends. A Fright to the Death strands Clyde, Mac, and their families at a supposedly haunted hotel during a snowstorm. In An Unhappy Medium, a Zombie Fun Run turns deadly as Clyde confronts the return of her sister and a tangle of old family secrets.

Expect a cozy mystery mood with ghosts, tarot cards, animal antics, romance, and some real tension when a killer is loose. The paranormal elements are part of daily life in Crystal Haven, while Clyde remains a useful counterweight because she approaches trouble with the habits of a cop.

Start with Pall in the Family. It introduces the Fortune family, Crystal Haven, and the mix of murder, psychic oddities, and dry humor that carries through all four books.
