In the walled city of Isara, a simmering rebellion erupts just as legionnaire in training Luca Matius falls in love with Maris Casperia, a Magistrate’s daughter and novice to the last Priestess. Their forbidden bond entwines them in divine magic, political upheaval, and a holy war.
Series background & context
Fallen City opens a new fantasy cycle from Adrienne Young, set within the towering walls of Isara. This is a city of marble forums, smoky taverns, and secret shrines, where politics feels as dangerous as any battlefield and the gods are never entirely silent.
A century earlier, a failed uprising reshaped Isara, leaving power in the hands of a small circle of Magistrate families and the priests who control the last scraps of stolen magic from an ancient war. Ordinary citizens serve, fight, or scrape by at the edges, watched over by legionnaires and a ruling class that is determined to keep old patterns in place. Underneath the rituals and speeches, a new rebellion has been slowly gathering momentum.
Luca Matius grows up inside that system. As the heir to a powerful family, his task is supposed to be simple, keep his uncle's influence alive in the Forum and secure the Matius name. Instead, his apprenticeship with the city's Philosopher pulls him into questions about justice, history, and what loyalty really means, placing him close to the fault lines that are about to crack Isara open.
Across the city, Maris Casperia has been raised in the Citadel's inner circle, the daughter of a Magistrate who expects obedience. By serving as a novice to the last Priestess who still wields forbidden magic, Maris sees first hand how the city's power is propped up by old bargains and quiet cruelty. She begins to imagine a different future for Isara, one that would cost her everything she was taught to value.
When Luca and Maris meet, their connection feels as fated as it is inconvenient. A hidden truth comes to light, plunging the city into chaos and forcing them to choose sides as protests flare into open revolt. Luca is pushed into the role of rebel symbol, while Maris finds herself bound to the very institutions she hoped to change, their paths crossing and diverging as a holy war rises around them.
Fallen City sets up a series that combines slow burn romance with questions about faith, free will, and who gets to rewrite history. Expect crowded streets, whispered conspiracies in candlelit halls, and glimpses of a pantheon that may be nudging events from just out of sight. Even in this first volume, it is clear that the fate of Isara will not be decided only in the Forum, but in the choices Luca and Maris make about what, and whom, they are willing to fight for.
