Series background & context
“Fallen Angels (JR Ward)” focuses on how this six book cycle fits alongside the rest of Ward’s universe. The premise remains the same: Jim Heron dies in Caldwell, is turned into a reluctant savior, and is told he must win more souls than he loses in a series of seven tests. The demon Devina serves as his opponent on the field.
What makes the series distinct is how grounded it feels. Although angels and demons walk the page, most scenes take place in familiar spaces: construction sites, jail cells, police stations, back roads, and anonymous hotel rooms. The people Jim tries to help are not vampires or wolven but ordinary humans facing messy, recognizable problems like greed, rage, obsession, and fear.
The romance arcs are woven straight into those moral choices. Every book introduces a couple whose relationship becomes the hinge of the round, whether that is a businessman and a woman who forces him to question everything, a soldier and his public defender, or a cop and the internal affairs investigator assigned to watch him. Their happy endings are never guaranteed, and sometimes the cost of a win is brutally high.
Readers coming from Black Dagger Brotherhood will recognize the city of Caldwell, a familiar bar, and a few small overlaps in the timeline. Devina later appears in the BDB novels, bringing her history with Jim into that series. For that reason, some fans like to read Fallen Angels between certain Brotherhood installments, while others simply treat it as its own complete story and dive back into the vampires afterward.
If you prefer a clear beginning, middle, and end, Fallen Angels delivers that in six volumes, from Covet through Immortal. This guide exists to lay out that order, sketch the core premise, and help you decide whether to blend the books with BDB or binge them as a separate, tightly focused saga about sin, sacrifice, and the chance to start over.
