Series background & context

The Fall Away series follows a tight circle of friends in the fictional town of Shelburne Falls, from their combustible high school years into college and early adulthood. Street races, late night parties and small town gossip sit next to real hurt about family, class and feeling stuck. It is new adult romance that leans into messy first love rather than polished fairy tales.

The story starts in Bully, where Tate Brandt comes home from a year in France ready to reclaim her senior year, only to face years of cruelty from her former best friend, Jared Trent. Their neighbors to enemies to lovers dynamic sets the tone for the whole series, mixing bullying, forgiveness and attraction in a way that many readers either strongly connect with or avoid on purpose.

Until You runs parallel to that first book, giving Jared’s point of view. It fills in the summer that broke him, his time with an abusive father and how his anger curdled into the behavior Tate sees at school. Together the two books make their relationship feel less like a trope and more like two damaged kids stumbling toward adulthood.

From there the focus shifts to the wider friend group. Rival follows Madoc Caruthers and Fallon Pierce, step siblings whose secret teen romance ends in betrayal, only for her to return years later intent on revenge. Falling Away brings quiet manipulator Jaxon Trent together with rule following K.C. Carter after her college life implodes and she is sent home for community service. Each couple wrestles not only with love and lust, but with parents who failed them, reputations they helped create and the question of who they want to be when high school ends.

Aflame revisits Jared and Tate years after graduation, once he has walked away to chase racing and she has learned to stand without him. Their last book pushes on whether a first love that started in such a toxic way can grow into something more equal, and it gives closure to long running threads in the group.

Two shorter works live alongside the main novels. In Next to Never, younger sister Quinn Caruthers peeks into her parents’ rocky origin story while figuring out what she wants for herself, quietly setting up the Hellbent spin off. Adrenaline is a collection of bonus scenes, alternate moments and a future glimpse that lets readers stay in Shelburne Falls a little longer.

Taken together, the Fall Away books read like one long, soapily intense coming of age story. You can follow publication order, start with Bully and move straight through, or dip in for a particular couple and treat each romance as a standalone with strong ties to the others.
