Author bio

Faith Hunter was born in Louisiana and raised all over the South. She has said that she fell in love with reading in fifth grade, especially science fiction, fantasy, and gothic mystery, and that early appetite still shows in the kinds of worlds she builds now.

In high school, a teacher told her she had talent. That simple push mattered, and it helped turn writing from a private hope into something she could seriously chase.

Hunter did not come to fiction from a tidy, writerly path. She studied allied health technology and spent years balancing everyday work with the slower, less predictable work of building a career on the page. That practical streak never really left her. It helps explain why even her strangest books often feel solid underfoot, full of work, tools, bodies in motion, and the real cost of surviving bad situations.

She writes thrillers, mysteries, and action-adventure as Gwen Hunter, and fantasy as Faith Hunter. The split makes sense when you read across both names. No matter the genre, she likes pressure, danger, and people who have to think while the ground is shifting under them.

A lot of readers first meet her through Skinwalker, the opening Jane Yellowrock novel. Jane is a Cherokee skinwalker and vampire hunter working in New Orleans, and the books blend action, mystery, supernatural politics, and a running inner conversation with Beast, the mountain lion soul who shares Jane's body. Readers who love that series usually talk about the same things: the fight scenes, the sharp voice, the messy loyalties, and the way Jane's world keeps getting larger without losing its grit.

Hunter likes heroines who are tough, but not simple.

That shows up in Bloodring, the first Rogue Mage novel, where Thorn St. Croix tries to stay alive in a frozen, post-apocalyptic world shaped by seraphs, demons, fear, and faith. It shows up again in Blood of the Earth, which introduces Nell Ingram, a quieter kind of protagonist, a woman escaping a cult and learning to use her earth magic while helping investigate paranormal crimes. And it shows up in Junkyard Cats, where Shining Smith guards a junkyard full of secrets in a near-future world of alien tech, biker power, and hard survival.

The South runs through a lot of Hunter's work. Sometimes it is the humid pressure of New Orleans. Sometimes it is mountain country, deep woods, or rough backroads. Either way, place matters in her fiction. So do hunger, exhaustion, injury, and the plain stubborn business of making it to the next day. Her characters do not float above the world. They have to live in it.

She has also written short fiction and companion collections that deepen her series, and she helped develop a role-playing game based on the Rogue Mage setting. On her site, she says she writes full-time now, and she shares a life with her husband that includes RV travel, Japanese maples, orchids, and white-water kayaking around the Southeast.

That mix of ordinary detail and high-risk adventure feels very much like a Faith Hunter book.
