Author bio

David B Coe grew up in the suburbs outside New York City, in a family where books mattered and stories were always close at hand. He has said that he wrote his first novel at six, a tale called Jim the Talking Fish, and he has also admitted that the title may have been the best thing about it.

He was hooked early.

Before he became a full-time novelist, Coe took the scenic route. He studied at Brown University, then earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. in U.S. history from Stanford. For a time he considered an academic career, and he also worked as a political consultant. That mix of history, politics, and lived-in argument helps explain a lot about his fiction. Even when he is writing about sorcerers, demons, or time travel, he cares about institutions, power, loyalty, and the way public pressure can warp private lives.

He began writing full time in 1994, and his first published novel, Children of Amarid, arrived in 1997. That book launched the Lon Tobyn Chronicle, the trilogy that brought him the Crawford Fantasy Award. Those early novels already show several of the things readers now associate with him: layered worldbuilding, competing systems of power, and characters who have to make decent choices in bad situations.

He likes putting people under strain and seeing what holds.

Readers know him from several different corners of fantasy. Under his own name he wrote the Winds of the Forelands books and the connected Blood of the Southlands trilogy, large-scale secondary-world fantasies built around conspiracy, war, prejudice, and divided loyalties. He also wrote the contemporary urban fantasy Spell Blind, followed by His Father's Eyes and Shadow's Blade, which bring magic and crime into modern Phoenix through private investigator Justis Fearsson.

Under the name D.B. Jackson, he opened up another side of his bibliography. Thieftaker and its sequels follow Ethan Kaille, a conjurer and investigator working in pre-Revolutionary Boston, mixing murder cases with real historical unrest. Later, Time's Children, Time's Demon, and Time's Assassin turned to time travel and epic fantasy, while newer books like Radiants and The Chalice War: Stone show that he is still interested in trying new shapes and tones without losing the themes that have always mattered to him.

Across all of this, a few habits repeat. Coe likes systems, who controls them, who gets shut out of them, and what it costs to resist. He also returns again and again to people living with burdens they cannot simply shrug off: dangerous magic, family history, public suspicion, old grudges, and choices that keep echoing long after the moment passes.

Outside the novels, he has long been active in the writing community. He co-founded the group blog Magical Words and co-wrote How to Write Magical Words: A Writer's Companion. He has also written a great deal about revision, publishing, birdwatching, and the practical work of making books, which feels right for an author whose fiction is imaginative but rarely floaty.

For many years he wrote while raising a family with his wife and two daughters, and that groundedness comes through. Even his biggest stories tend to remember that history may be grand, but life is still lived one hard choice at a time.
