Expert System Books in Order

The Expert System books begin by looking like fantasy. There is a village. There are ghosts. There are rituals, taboos, monsters, and a social order everyone accepts because they have never known anything else.

Then Adrian Tchaikovsky starts lifting the floorboards.

The first novella follows Handry, a young man whose accident and exile push him outside the only life he understands. Once he is cut off from the village, the world gets stranger and bigger very quickly. The ghosts that guide the people, the ecology around them, and even the history of how they came to this planet all turn out to be part of a far more science-fictional picture than the opening suggests.

That mix is the series’ real strength. These books are not just doing a reveal for the sake of cleverness. They are interested in how societies form around broken systems, inherited instructions, and misunderstood technology. Handry’s personal story matters because he is forced to ask questions his community never had the language, or the permission, to ask.

The Expert System’s Champion moves the story on by showing an older Handry and a world that is still unstable. He has made a rough life among outcasts and wanderers, but the land itself is changing. Beasts act against their old patterns, settlements are threatened, and the Ancients are no longer able to explain what is happening. That gives the second book a slightly broader, more mythic feel without losing the hard edge of survival.

So this is a compact sequence, but not a slight one. Expect a harsh planet, improvised communities, unreliable inherited wisdom, and that very Tchaikovsky knack for taking a setting that seems legible at first and turning it into something much stranger. If you like science fantasy where the border between myth and machinery is the whole point, this pair is a very good fit.
